Mindful Eating as a Spiritual Practice: How Reiki, Hypnosis, and Healing Trauma Changed My Relationship with Food

I wasn’t taught to listen to my body—I was taught to clean my plate.
Dinner in my childhood home was rigid, emotionally charged, and unpredictable. It was served promptly at 5 p.m., the table set just so, and only the foods my father liked were allowed. I learned early that being “a good little girl” meant eating what was given, whether I liked it or not. But beneath that surface compliance lived an ache—a need for safety, comfort, and control.

I began hiding forbidden foods to soothe myself. I became what my mother called “husky” and by age 12 I had already entered the exhausting cycle of yo-yo dieting, diet pills, and body shame. For years, I tried to force my body into someone else’s ideal. What followed was a diagnosis of IBS and then Crohn’s disease—messages from my body I finally learned to listen to.
That journey led me to something radically different: mindful eating—not as another diet or discipline, but as a spiritual practice rooted in presence, compassion, and self-awareness. And Reiki and hypnosis became the tools that helped me heal from the inside out.
What Is Mindful Eating? How Reiki and Hypnosis Help You Tune In
Mindful eating is the practice of bringing your full awareness to the experience of eating—without judgment, agenda, or autopilot.

Rather than obsessing over calories or labels, mindful eating invites us to feel our food: its texture, aroma, energy, and effect on the body. It asks, “What do I really need right now?”—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually.
Reiki helps regulate the nervous system, which is essential for presence. When we’re stuck in fight-or-flight, we eat reactively, often to numb or distract. Reiki creates a safe inner environment, so our body’s signals can be heard again.
Hypnosis helps rewire subconscious patterns—the ones that cause us to binge, restrict, or eat to please. It works below the surface to gently shift beliefs like “I must clean my plate” or “Food is comfort,” so new choices feel natural, not forced.
Breaking the Cycle: Emotional Eating and Energy Imbalances
So many of us eat from our wounds, not our wisdom.

Unresolved emotions—especially from childhood—live in the body. They create energetic blockages that distort how we experience hunger and fullness. For me, family dinners were chaotic. Raised voices. Arguments. Silent withdrawals. I learned to gulp my food, to get it over with quickly. Even now, being around intoxicated people at a meal can trigger me to shut down and shovel food in without chewing.
Reiki has helped me release stored emotional energy that used to surge up at meals. In session, clients often discover that their cravings are tied to grief, loneliness, or unprocessed fear. Hypnosis helps unhook those emotional loops, gently guiding the mind to create new, self-honoring responses.
How to Start a Mindful Eating Ritual (That Feeds Your Spirit Too)
Here’s how to begin your own mindful eating practice—no perfection required.
Create a Calm Space
Turn off distractions. Light a candle. Sit down somewhere peaceful.
Take a Breath
Before the first bite, place your hands over your food and invite Reiki energy or simply offer gratitude. This blesses the meal and calms your body.
Set an Intention
Say an affirmation such as, “I nourish my body with love,” or “I choose what feels kind to me.”
Slow Down
Chew slowly. Feel the flavors and textures. Notice how each bite lands in your body.
Check In
Pause mid-meal. Ask, “Am I still hungry? Am I still enjoying this?” There’s no right answer—just awareness.

All it takes is 5 minutes to bring calm to the body before a meal.
This isn’t about rigid rules. It’s about honoring your body as a sacred vessel.
Mindful Eating for Anxiety: Calming the Body Before a Meal
Stress hijacks digestion.
If you’re eating while anxious, your body can’t properly digest or absorb nutrients. I used to eat while working or worrying, then wonder why I felt bloated or unsettled.
Try this simple Reiki-inspired grounding before a meal:
Sit quietly and place one hand on your heart, the other on your belly.
Inhale through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 2, exhale through your mouth for 6.
Repeat 3 times, silently saying, “I am safe. I am present.”
You can also use a short hypnotic suggestion like: “I slow down to care for myself. I deserve to be nourished.”

Final Reflections
My journey with food has been deeply personal, spiritual, and non-linear. I now see mindful eating not as a goal, but a gentle, ongoing practice—one that allows me to reconnect with my body, honor my energy, and release the patterns that no longer serve.

Reiki and hypnosis were the gateways that helped me come home to myself. If you’re ready to explore these tools, I’d love to support you.
Let’s nourish the body, mind, and spirit—together.
